Informed by American Kennel Club® Trick Dog Resources | Step-by-Step Support for Teaching Novice Tricks Trick training is a fun way to build communication, provide meaningful enrichment, and practice new skills together. Whether your dog is learning to spin, high five, carry an item, or move through a hoop, each trick can be taught through small, achievable steps. This online course is designed to help pet parents teach trick skills that may be used toward the AKC Novice Trick Dog title, also known as TKN. Rather than expecting your dog to learn a finished behavior all at once, you will learn how to break each trick into manageable steps, reinforce progress, and adjust your plan when your dog needs more support. Through guided trick lessons, practical examples, worksheets, and step-by-step training plans, you will learn how to: • Teach selected Novice-level trick skills using reward-based guidance • Build clear cues and gradually reduce food lures • Choose tricks that fit your dog’s comfort, physical ability, and current skills • Recognize when to make a trick easier or take a break • Practice consistently without overwhelming your dog This course includes individual lessons for a variety of Novice trick options, such as: • Spin in a circle and high five • Kiss, fetch, and carry an item • Leg weave, roll over, and play dead • Jump through a hoop or arms, when appropriate for your dog The goal is not perfect performance. It is to help you and your dog build enjoyable, clear, voluntary trick skills one step at a time. This course teaches trick-training skills only. It does not include an AKC® Trick Dog evaluation, certification, title application, title submission, or review of completed tricks. Pet parents who choose to pursue an AKC Trick Dog title must complete a separate evaluation with an AKC Approved CGC Evaluator and confirm current AKC requirements.
